[Articles] Universitas Airlangga: A Vanguard in Academic Publishing

Ferry Efendi
External Affairs Committee Chair, Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia

In an era where the democratization of knowledge is more crucial than ever, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) located in Surabaya, Indonesia is setting new standards in academic publishing. Spearheaded by Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, the Head of the Institute of Innovation, Journal Development, Press, and Intellectual Property Rights, the university is home to a burgeoning portfolio of over a hundred scholarly journals. The institution’s commitment to quality is evident in its impressive metrics: 11 journals indexed by SCOPUS, one by ESCI/Web of Science, 50 by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and 85 by SINTA. All journals are open-access and operate under Creative Commons Attribution licenses, inviting manuscripts from a global community of scholars and experts.

UNAIR is not just resting on its laurels. The university has orchestrated a series of workshops aimed at elevating the quality of its journals both nationally and internationally. These workshops, held in May, June, July, and September of 2023, bring in seasoned experts to guide journal managers at UNAIR. For instance, a workshop in May featured Mrs. Dju-Lyn Chng from Clarivate, who emphasized the stringent criteria required for indexing by ESCI/Web of Science. Despite its successes, UNAIR acknowledges the work ahead. Over 50 of its journals are yet to be indexed by DOAJ. To address this, a specialized workshop was held in June 2023, featuring ambassadors from DOAJ who provided hands-on coaching to ensure that the journals meet the indexing criteria.

The institution is also looking beyond its borders. A Focus Group Discussion in September 2023, featuring all journals’ editor at UNAIR, explored strategies for international collaboration in journal management. Furthermore, UNAIR conducts annual journal mentoring activities, involving 100 journals this year, aimed at enhancing their quality and reputation on both national and international stages.

Universitas Airlangga is more than just an academic institution; it’s a powerhouse of scholarly communication. With a robust portfolio of journals and an unyielding commitment to quality, UNAIR is shaping the future of academic publishing, one journal at a time. By embracing innovation and quality, Universitas Airlangga is not just advancing its own reputation; it’s elevating the entire academic community.
