Author : Youngim Jung

The 2019 CASE Executive Board (EB) Meeting and Scholarly Publication Workshop was held at the Mercure Seoul Ambassador Gangnam Sodowe hotel in Seoul, South Korea, from July 1 to 3. It was co-organized by CASE (Council of Asian Science Editors) and KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information), and sponsored by Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences, Editage, and Korean Council of Science Editors (KCSE).

On Day 1, CASE EB members from eight Asian countries gathered for networking with fellow delegates from each nation and enjoyed the welcome dinner organized by the host. On Day 2, the 6th CASE Executive Board Meeting for “EB members only” was held in the morning. R. Subramaniam (President of CASE) and Hyungsun Kim (President of KCSE) delivered the welcome addresses. According to the EB meeting’s formal procedure, results of activities and projects on academic journal publishing in the national context were reported by KCSE, VASE, and IASJE. Plans for future CASE activities and projects were discussed and approved by the EB members, and a few proposals from the ground were considered.

The speech of Jinkyu Ha (former president of CASE) on the EB members’ role and responsibility sparked in-depth discussions on strategies for improving CASE. R. Subramaniam gave a talk titled “Enhancing the international profile of CASE,” after which, each committee for Education, Ethics, Internalization and Publication of CASE shared their thoughts on the activity plan and role as EB member for CASE members.

In the afternoon, the Scholarly Publication Workshop was held as an open forum for CASE members. Not only CASE members but also its global partners, including Editage, Elsevier, Clarivate, and Crossref, and local partners, including KISTI and KCSE, participated in it and shared their strategies for supporting academic journals in Asian countries.

On Day 3, each committee discussed its action plan for its activities in detail. EB members from outside South Korea joined for an informal tour of Bukchon Hanok Village, and enjoyed the sights and set-up of Korea’s traditional residence.

The CASE EB Meeting is a key activity for CASE members to get connected and develop its plan and strategy for the improvement of scholarly publishing in Asian countries; the 6th meeting provided this important opportunity for carrying out formal procedures for the CASE management internationally and networking with fellow delegates. In addition, the workshop provided an open forum for successfully sharing trending information and knowledge on global scholarly publishing.
